The fate of democracy

June 20th, 2009 by Sassan

Good Morning and welcome to “The fate of democracy” !

Let me take a few moments to explain the title of my blog. It comes from a quote by the now former president of the Israeli Supreme Court, Ahron Barak. In a judgment outruling lawfulnes of violent interrogation against terrorist suspects he said:

This is the fate of democracy, as not all means are acceptable to it, and not all methods employed by its enemies are open to it. Sometimes, a democracy must fight with one hand tied behind its back. Nonetheless, it has the upper hand. Preserving the rule of law and recognition of individual liberties constitute an important component of its understanding of security. At the end of the day, they strengthen its spirit and strength and allow it to overcome its difficulties.

If people ask who or what I am, they usually come up with  a few things. I usually come up with a few things, depending on the context. But the one thing I always say about my self (implicitly or directly) is that I am a democrat. Not in a us-political context but in the true meaning of the word.  This is the reason I choosed “The fate of democracy” as a title for this blog.

What is the purpose of this blog? I like to share my thoughts about the world around me with more people than I usually can reach :) . I have blogged before (http://inessencedivided.blogsport.de) and you can follow me on twitter @germankiwi. But I felt it was time for a new platform (thank you wordpress) and a new title for a blog.

This blog is a ‘living instrument’, it will adapt, change and maybe undergo revolutions from time to time, all in accordance with the needs, hopes, dreams and desires of the author.

No more to say at the moment, thanks for dropping by :)
